Christopher Harriman Shot and Killed by Maine State Trooper
Christopher Harriman, a 38-year-old resident of Limerick, Maine, was fatally shot by a Maine State Trooper on Tuesday night.
Incident Details
Harriman was reported to be brandishing a rifle and making threats to harm himself and others at the Kennebunk rest area on the Maine Turnpike. Authorities were alerted by a woman who reported Harriman’s suicidal threats and his possession of an AR-style rifle in a black Cadillac Escalade.
Police Response
State police received the call shortly after 6:30 p.m. When troopers arrived at the rest area, Harriman was not present. The woman caller provided additional information, leading officers from Saco, Old Orchard Beach, and state troopers to respond.
Pursuit and Confrontation
Harriman led the officers on a slow-speed chase. During the pursuit, he pointed his gun out of his car window towards the officers. The pursuit ended in the parking lot of a Shop ‘n Save, where law enforcement attempted to negotiate with Harriman, urging him to surrender.
Fatal Encounter
Despite the officers’ efforts to de-escalate the situation, Harriman reached into his car, retrieved his gun, and loaded a round. At this point, MSP Trooper Ryan Phillips shot and killed Harriman to prevent further danger.
